Have you ever read an artist’s statement and had no idea whatsoever what they were saying? That drives me nuts. Along with the basics, I get a little philosophical but I won’t leave you lost in the weeds. Promise.

Basics first:

What:

I paint mostly on linen fabric with natural pigments from the earth mixed with oil, usually walnut.

I paint directly from life or from a study I made on location.

Where:

As a full time artist in Greenville, SC (known as the gateway to the Blue Ridge mountains), I often paint in the forests, lakes and creeks along the border of North and South Carolina. I also paint in my studio from life.

Next, the WHY.

While I’m not above matching the color of your sofa if you’re just looking for art to fill a wall space (And thank you for supporting my passion! ) often there’s more happening between the artist, the work and “the collector”. (Parenthesis because collectors sometimes hesitate to refer to themselves as such.)

In my life and perhaps in yours, art is a source of hope, healing, growth, and connection—able to stir within us a positive powerful energy in a hurting world. In our toughest times, art is more, not less to us.

Abstraction, Modernism, Realism, Impressionism. Watercolor, Pencil, Blockprint, Oil, Gouache. I love it all and I have my favorites throughout history. I’ve curated a massive online library of my favorite 100+ artists that is a joy to get lost in. ( again, newsletter content.)

Like handwriting, personal style is innate and unavoidable if we paint enough to reveal it. My art reflects my personality. Frugality, passion, ( bold marks) reductionist ( simplification of form) , minimalist (limited color palette) and a deep love for beauty and light. Hopeful. I am humbled by ever present mystery.

And I want to retain and honor mystery in my work. I do not desire to copy what I see. I struggle to simplify and imply. To interact with what I see and create what feels like awe . Too many details and I lose the mystery that invites the viewer to pick up where I left off.

When a viewer connects with a piece they bring the piece to completion with a power and energy that is unique to them. And so it becomes theirs in a personal way and when they place it in their personal space it is their work as well as mine. It is OUR work. I am looking for the viewer who stops and innately engages with what I started. My art is an invitation to you.

Why? To bring hope and positive energy to the spaces in where the art comes to live.

I paint for myself but also for those who need a moment of quiet reflection, a reminder of beauty, or a sense of peace in their daily lives. And a quiet stillness that honors mystery.

Or if asked, just a nice cobalt blue to match the sofa. But I’ll try to sneak in some good juju too.

And a little about my background and art education:

Before turning to painting full-time, I spent 15 years as a full time professional photographer. That time behind the lens honed my sensitivity to light and color, which deeply shapes how I approach a canvas today. Merging my photographic background with my love for direct observation allows me to weave fieldwork and studio work together.

My mother, a professional watercolorist (TWS) and a father who appreciated beauty provided a childhood of arts immersion and great training. As an adult, I took art in college and studied under Master, Wanye Wu in my twenties. In recent years, I have been fortunate to study with contemporary painters Anne Blair Brown, Sarah Sedwick, David Shevlino, James Richards and Ukrainian artist Natalia Nosyk as well as online with Quang Ho, Marshall Vandruff and Robert Zeller. Early on a wise artist advised me to find a mentor whose work and character I admire and stay the course. Great advice! Since 2020, I have benefited greatly from mentorship under Jim Carson, OPA, AIS.
