CLASS DESCRIPTION
Alla Prima Portraits, using the Zorn Palette
Three-day intensive workshop painting from life using Anders Zorn’s limited palette. Painting from the live model, using white, yellow ochre, cadmium red medium and ivory black.
Each morning begins with instruction and a demo. After lunch, all the students have the opportunity to paint the model with lots of one-on-one instruction and gentle critiquing. We will focus on color, values, specifics on facial features, painting shapes rather than lines, and measuring for an accurate likeness.
The workshop is designed with lots of handouts for reference during and later.
I ask all students to prepare a color chart as homework before they come to the workshop. The result is that they become acquainted with the limited palette before we begin. I’ve put together a YouTube video that takes them through preparing a color chart step-by-step.

SCHEDULE
3-Day Oil Painting Workshop - 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
Class is from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm each day.
Please arrive early the first morning. Ellie will be there to greet you starting at 8:15 am so you can set up your easel/supplies and we can get started at 9 am.
We will break for an hour or so each day for lunch. The studio is in the center of downtown and there are a number of good restaurants and cafes within walking distance. Ellie will provide coffee, tea and light snacks throughout the day to help keep everyone fresh and happy. We have a full size refrigerator, and microwave at the studio so feel free to bring your own lunch if you like.
